Would you allow your mechanic to register your car in his name?  Would you sign over your business name to the company who does your printing?

No?  I didn't think so.  Those are things you own.  There's no way you would let someone else take ownership, even if you are the one "using" them.

Small business owners... be AWARE of what is going on with your property.

When you get a domain name (example:  www.acmefruitstand.ca), that domain name must be REGISTERED to a company or individual who claims ownership to that domain.

That domain name may come bundled with other offerings, such as web hosting, design work or website development.  But at the end of the day, the domain name registration is 100% separate from whatever it's bundled with.  Demand that you own it.

Your DOMAIN NAME is sacred.  In many cases, it's both your intellectual property and vitally important to the way you do business.  Do not under ANY circumstance let your designer, web developer, marketing guy or whoever it is that is helping you.. do NOT have them register your business domain name in their name on your behalf.

Ensure that your domain name is registered in your own name, with your own address, phone number and email address listed under the registrant info.

I can't tell you how many times I have had a new client who has a domain name directly tied to their business, and they have no idea who owns their domain.  In most cases, their last web company or random basement web designer had registered the domain under their own name.  In a few cases, that client has lost their domain to unscrupulous businesses who hold domains hostage in lieue of payment for other services (which is illegal, by the way).

Keep your business and intellectual property!  It's yours.  Guard it and care about it enough to be informed.

Either register your domain names yourself, or ENSURE that the company or person you are dealing with registers your domain name in YOUR name.
